Seattle's summer is off to a hot start // (c) Stephen Flnn -

Seattle's summer is off to a hot start.  In fact, Seattlest reported that Seattle's weather beat L.A.'s (for a few short days out of the year, that is).

So what's a Seattleite to do when it comes to beating the heat?  Well sure, I guess you could kayak, swim in a lake, or drive to the mountains.

But here are some pointers on how we handle the summer back in Jersey, in case you're stuck for ideas.  Thrifty?  Definitely.  Classy?  You be the judge.

1.) Go down the shore
This is Jersey speak for, "Go to the beach."  Golden Gardens is a great substitute -- close your eyes, and it's almost like you can hear Bon Jovi blaring from the boardwalk.

2.) Hang out at the mall
Every once in a while, a day comes around that's so hot, there's nothing you can do to escape ... except head to the air conditioned mall!  It's a Jersey institution, but the Seattle area's got plenty of them.

3.) Catch a movie or go bowling
If you're looking for something a little more entertaining, other Jersey favorites include heading to the movies or a bowling alley.  They're packed during the summer because -- you guessed it -- they're air conditioned.

4.) Throw a poolside BBQ
Hang out by the pool, throw some Italian sausage on the grill, put some Bruce Springsteen tunes on, and you've got yourself a BBQ!  Don't have a pool?  Running through the yard sprinkler will suffice.

5.) Have some Italian ices
After a long summer day, I'd wait for the Little Jimmy's Italian ice truck -- not the ice cream man.  There's nothing more refreshing on a hot day, but I've only been able to find some at the Seattle Center.  Molly Moon's sorbet comes in at a close second.

So there you have it.  I know things are supposed to cool down again over the weekend, but it's only June ... you just might thank me for this when it hits July.
