Seattleites are notorious (er, famous?) for their casual attire.  For better or for worse, they're known for wearing their versatile uniform of fleece vests and hiking boots (or sandals and socks) everywhere from the office to the campsite.

So if you're moving to town, does that mean you should stock up on earth tones and water resistant pants galore?  Well, sure -- if you plan on living in a yurt.

The truth is, not everyone here roams the streets dressed to go camping at a moment's notce, no matter how much they love the great outdoors. In fact, Seattle has a Fashion Week of its own.  So here are some Seattle fashion do's and don'ts.

1.) DON'T try to scale the hills of Seattle in your stilletos.  Torturing your feet with ridiculously high heels is considered a right of passage in New York -- but it won't get you far in Seattle (literally).  They don't need to go the way of Goodwill -- just save them for a night out.

2.)  DO wear layers.  If it seems like people in Seattle have a way with layers, it's because they need to prepare for a variety of weather conditions over the course of a single day.  Rain, sunshine, hail, high winds, you name it.

3.) DON'T wear fur.  Every once in a while, in cities far, far away from the West Coast, you'll see ladies don their finest furs for a night out on the town.  Not in Seattle.  If you choose to wear fur, be prepared to hear an earful ... or be mistaken for a bear.

4.) DO buy fashionable, versatile clothes that actually do translate from the office to the campsite.  Okay, that advice may seem contradictory, but it is possible to pull this off in style.  (Three letters: R-E-I).

5.) DON'T be snobby.  Seattle isn't an especially self-conscious city when it comes to clothing.  No one's likely to look at you askance if you walk into a fancy restaurant wearing a pair of jeans, and you're not likely to have any Pretty Woman moments while shopping.  For all they know, you could be a billionaire.

6.) DO take advantage of Seattle's amazing second-hand and vintage stores.  This city's got a lot of residents with a strong and unique sense of individual style -- and somebody else's donations could be your ticket to a fabulous find.
