Making the most of a rainy day in Seattle

The Seattle Art Museum // www.seattle.net

The air is getting cooler, which means it's almost time to pack away the Crocs and sandals - or throw on a pair of socks with them.

It also means the rainy season's coming, which can be a particularly tough period of hibernation if you're new to the city.  Sure, you could take off to the mountains and enjoy the snow every couple weekends.  But if you just want to make the most of a rainy day in the city, here are some ideas that'll help you get to know the area a little better without spending a ton of money.

1.) Woodinville Wine Country - Treat yourself to one of the free/cheap tours and wine tastings that Woodinville has to offer and savor your rainy day.

2.) Seattle Art Museum - There's more to SAM than great art - the museum is also host to some surprising events and a very cool restaurant (TASTE).

3.) Volunteer Park - Experience the outdoors inside from the Volunteer Park Conservatory, and then duck into the Asian Art Museum to make a day of it.

4.) Woodland Park Zoo - The zoo has a rainy day tour map to guide you through 10 covered exhibits (plus there's the Zoomazium center for kids).

5.) Seattle Public Library - Curl up with a book and watch the rain from inside the Rem Koolhaas glass structure, or check out a reading or screening.

6.) Central Cinema - Not only can you catch a great indie flick or documentary for $5, but you can watch it while enjoying pizza and beer.  Genius.

And of course, it's easy to take for granted the obvious - that is, the scores of great coffeehouses and community centers that Seattle has to offer.  Have a great rainy day!
