Greetings from New York, where I am currently in bagel bliss. I know, New Yorkers can be obnoxious about their bagels, among other things. But experiencing the chewy goodness all over again has got me thinking - maybe there really is something in the water tha tmakes New York bagels so damn tasty and tough to replicate.
Then again, there are plenty of people and recipes out there purporting that the New York bagel can in fact be made outside of New York, even as far as Seattle (*gasp*). I want to believe that's true - and rest assured that I'll be on the lookout when I'm back in town.
Bagels spark fierce discussion (there are online debates about whether Noah's really sells New York bagels). So I can only talk about the places I've been. And so far, I'm relatively pleased with the selection of bagels, bialys and shmear (toppings, that is) at Ravenna's Bagel Oasis, owned by a guy from Brooklyn. (Note: that's not the same as Bagel Oasis NY). But on days when I'm more into atmosphere, I find myself at Cafe Solstice or Irwin's, which have decent bagels - if you can get there early enough.
But I realized there are a host of bagel places I have yet to try. Here's where I hope my Seattle bagel tasting odyssey to take me:
Pike Place Bagel Bakery - Slogan: "The only thing unnatural is the size."
Seattle Bagel Bakery - If they only make bagels, they have to be good ... right?
The Bagel Deli - Sellng Kosher New York style bagels
Zatz A Better Bagel - Located in West Seattle, although the bagels are steamed rather than boiled...
Mikie's Brooklyn Bagel - Located in Redmond. How have I not heard of this place before?
As you can see, this borders on an obsession. So if you know of a great bagel spot in or around Seattle, share the wealth!
