Appetizers at Preet's in Redmond // www.coffee.net

Seattle's got some fantastic restaurants, like Wild Ginger and Palace Kitchen.  But there's still something missing - the South Asian equivalent (that is, a restaurant/lounge with authentic but inventive Indian food and great ambiance).

I'll admit I'm biased.  I grew up near some of the country's largest South Asian communities (Oak Tree Road in Edison, N.J. and Jackson Heights, N.Y.).  Add Manhattan into the mix and you have restaurants ranging from cheap but classic, to moderate and trendy, to experimental and "you could feed an entire village for that price."

The Seattle area doesn't have as much of a range, but that's not to diminish all the great Indian and Pakistani food.  But surprisingly, some of the most authentic and unusual spots aren't in the city:

  • Preet's (Redmond): Vegetarian Punjabi food that tastes homemade - not your typical fare.
  • Udupi Palace (Bellevue): The best spot for S. Indian food - the dosas (lentil crepes) rival N.Y.
  • Tandoori Kitchen (Redmond): Tender kababs and classic N. Indian cuisine done well.
  • Kabab House (Greenwood): An unassuming spot with great kababs and creative lunch rolls.
  • Naan N Curry (Renton): Okay, I've never been, but I've heard it's one of the best Indo-Pak spots!

But I also don't want to sell short all those reliable standbys in the U-District.  Spots like Cedar's, Taste of India and Shalimar won't disappoint.  To be honest, I'm a tough customer and will probably continue to be one until there's an easy way for my mom to overnight her daal and koftas from N.J.  Yum.
