The MARTA mass transit system

Let’s face it – Atlanta has a pretty bad mass transit system. Local politics, poor planning, and general mismanagement have given us MARTA - a system that, for many years, never got you quite to where you needed to go.

But that’s changing as far as the local bar scene is concerned. Inner city revitalization has meant an upsurge in the amount of bars and restaurants which have opened for business within easy walking distance of at least one MARTA station. That means that, if you can manage to travel by train and get your drinking done before the trains stop running at 1 a.m., you can actually avoid that terrible thing known as drinking and driving. And you can avoid the exorbitant taxi cab fees that Atlanta cab companies tend to charge.

Thanks to the decision of many bar owners to go to MARTA (since MARTA can’t come to them), we can all be better, safer drinkers.

The following is a list of bars which exist near three midtown/intown MARTA stations. Thus begins a series of article dedicated to “bars near MARTA”. Look for more stations and more bar listings in future posts. BTW, this list is by no means comprehensive – the sometimes abrupt changes going on along the intown Atlanta landscape prohibit any list like this from being 100% accurate 100% of the time.

This installment will cover the North-South MARTA line, beginning with the first station north of Five Points and heading station-by-station northward.
