Universal's Couples Retreat

According to Box Office Mojo, Couples Retreat led the weekend with a strong $35 million opening in 3,000 theaters.  The romantic comedy stars Vince Vaughn, Jon Faverau, Kristen Bell, Jason Bateman, Malin Akerman, and Kristen Davis as couples that seek retreat from their everyday lives.

Zombieland fell to second place with $15 million.  Most horror films tend to fall 60 percent in ticket sales, even higher with horror-comedies.  Zombieland fell only 39 percent over the weekend, and now has a ten-day total of $47.8 million.

Sony’s other production, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs took third with $12 million.  The film saw a 24 percent drop in ticket sales.  The animated comedy now has a total of $96.3 million in 24 days.

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 3-D Double Feature came in fourth with $7.7 million.  It took a 37 percent drop in ticket sales.  The double feature has a ten-day total of $22 million, with no word of the feature being extended further.

The indie hit Paranormal Activity from Paramount took the fifth spot with $7.1 million and now has an outstanding $8.3 million since it’s midnight showings on September 25th.  The film averaged $44,163 in only 160 theaters and surpassed Platoon’s $3.7 million in 173 theaters.  The film has received major buzz and is now fully released.
