It's known in Spain as the festival of San Fermin, and everywhere else as the "Running of the Bulls." It's a ceremony (!) that takes place every year in the Basque city of Pamplona, on the slopes of the Pyrenees in northern Spain, and, like the Omak Stampede, it's a combination of bravery and bravado. A small herd of young bulls are penned up at one end of town and stampeded through the narrow cobblestone streets to the bullring at the other end. All this (and the drinking) was celebrated by Hemingway and his would-be followers.
Still, there's a lot of folklore (and tourism) in the tradition, which takes place this week in Spain...and Seattle. Restaurateurs Joseba Jimenez de Jimenez and his wife, Carolin Messier, the owners of Basque restaurants Harvest Vine in Madison Park and Txori in Belltown are hosting a dinner in honor of San Fermin tonight. Tomorrow, they're staging a local Running of the Bulls through the alleys of Belltown; the $20 participation fee goes to charity.
The bulls? Not to worry. They're papier-mâché figures mounted on shopping carts, sponsored by local restaurants.
