From time to time, we're going to answer the question everyone is always asking your friendly Food Critic: what's your favorite restaurant?

Well, there are no permanent answers. Restaurant preferences, like ethics, are situational. What kind of food? Who's paying? What time of day? What's the occasion? What neighborhood? And so on.

But let's get started with a list of "best restaurants" in the Pike Place Market. Links are to the restaurants' own websites, which include contact info.

Best for seafood: Steelhead Diner (this was my choice for the Belltown-Market neighborhood "Restaurant of the Year" award).

Best for French: Le Pichet and the upstairs/downstairs duo of Campagne and Cafe Campagne. Le Pichet feels like Paris, Cafe Campagne feels like, well, Seattle!

Best for French-style: Place Pigalle  (especially for the mussels), Maximilien, and 94 Stewart. While you're at it, be sure to check out GM Nic Norton's wine and cheese blog, too!

Off the beaten path: upstairs neighbors in the Corner Market Building, Matt's In The Market and Chez Shea. I'd go to Matt's for a fresh-from-the-market lunch and Shea for a romantic dinner.

And don't forget that even the touristy Athenian and Lowell's have great views even if they don't have websites, and (as long as you don't get too wild) perfectly fine breakfasts.
