At first glance, this thing looks ridiculous, I've heard. If nothing else, it's generated some passionate debate, though. US Attorney General Eric Holder boldly declared we are a nation of "cowards" in terms of discussing the issue of race among ourselves. Well, here we are. With a black man in the White House, race hasn't been this bold, and the racists (black and white), haven't been this emboldened, in a long time.
On the one hand, there's the argument that says, "enough is enough" with the Obama slants. It references the rush to make money off the Obama children with Barbie look-a-like dolls (which Michele Obama quickly squashed). Then we heard about Obama Hot Wings. Fried Chicken?! was the cry! And now, we have Walgreen's hawking a Barack Obama Chia Pet. A Chia Pet.
A Chia Pet.
Aiiiight. I get the outrage. But there's another point of view out there that says, "Hey, every thing's not a racist insult. Isn't there a Kennedy Fried Chicken in just about every urban center in New Jersey? Was the Lincoln Motel once 'the welfare motel?'"
Look, the "American way" is a free market, come-up-with-an-idea-and-sell-it, capitalist system. Take all the money you can legally make, and run like hell. What's hotter in this universe these days than the name Obama? I can see where a business person can come up with the idea to stick "Obama" on the side of something, make it at least seem palatable, and sell it and hope it flies off shelves like Obama tee shirts and caps (if only the President could share in the profits).
Is the Obama Chia Pet about making money while the brand (Obama) is hot, or is this beneath the American President? Please use the space below to respond?
And oh, by the way. The Daily News says, these -- things -- will be coming to a drug store near you, soon.
