"Say hello, to my liddle friend!" No, not Tony Montana. (And, honestly, he's not so little.) But he is "The Man," and he's Newark's own... Stan Gilmer.
Stan comes right out of the East Ward; Hawkins Street School, Essex County College, FDU, Rutherford, two decades with US Customs and one woman since 1970, his wife, Betty.
The couple are empty-nesters now, with Stan, Jr. and Penny all grown up. Back in 1996, they relocated to Ellicott City, Maryland, where Stan spends most of his time in retirement pursuing his real passion, providing vocals for big bands in the area. He's been at it a long time.
Among his earliest successes was a collaboration with world-famous bandleader Frank Foster on his first original work, "Atlantic City: The Big Time Town." The single includes "a virtuoso" solo performance by pianist Mike Renzi.
Stan is currently the proud owner of more than 300 original scores by the late, great Sammy Davis, Jr. and has already recorded a CD, "Stan Gilmer Sings Sammy."
Take a peek at this performance from earlier this year at a benefit for a Baltimore area high school.
