My Weight Watchers journey, vol. 14; Keep your waistline from exploding this holiday weekend

July 4, 5:35 PM

If weekends are potential land mines for people trying to adopt healthier lifestyles, holiday weekends can be atomic bombs. By following some simple tips, you can enjoy time with family and friends without wavering from your commitment to be healthy.

If you are throwing your own party, you have a lot more control how you and others will eat. These tips from Weight Watchers will give you lots of ideas for appetizers, main dishes, drinks, desserts, and even atmosphere. There are lots of great recipes for the grill on the WW sight as well. It’s possible to have great food and great fun without being a bloated mess when you’re done.

If you are going to a party at someone else’s house, healthy eating can be more challenging. With a little planning, though, eating healthy at a party doesn’t have to be impossible. Try these strategies to help yourself avoid pitfalls:

  • Look at all your choices before making your selections. Choose only those you really like and don’t go overboard on the portions.
  • Don’t hang around the food table. Mingle and enjoy catching up with the people you came to see. If you aren’t right by the food, you won’t be grazing absent-mindedly. Plus, everyone will think you’re a sparkling conversationalist.
  • Stay hydrated. Water will quench your thirst and fill you up faster. If you alternate it with any alcoholic drinks you might consume, you’ll cut out a lot of empty calories and also stay more safely sober.
  • If there is more than one size of plate provided, choose the smaller one. It will look fuller with less food and you probably won’t take as much food.
  • Simpler alcoholic beverages pack less fat. Natural juices and diet sodas mix with liquor with less detriment to your waistline. Drink mixes like margarita mixes are usually heavy on calories.

Decide you are worth the effort to be healthy and declare your independence…your freedom to be a healthy eater. And if you slip up, don’t lose your perspective. As Scarlet O’Hara said, “Tomorrow is another day”. Blowing one day doesn’t mean you have to blow the whole weekend. Get back on the horse and start making healthier choices again tomorrow. After all, one bad day only means you probably had six good ones!

Be safe. Have fun. God bless.
