Some students are happy to go back to school and others have not yet completed their summer to-do and wish lists and could use more unstructured time.  If, however, you go to a school like Avocado Elementary in Homestead, Florida, you will probably have a great time.  A few years ago, the students worked with their teachers and the Miami Museum of Science to post information about the Everglades.  It's a great introduction to the animals in the Everglades.

If you decide to do your own study of an ecosystem near you, this project is a good model.  Learn enough about the environment to be safe; the more interesting your ecosystem the more likely it is to house venomous snakes, biting insects, and territorial birds and mammals.  Learn enough not to damage the environment as you study it.  Then take a camera and a journal (water, sunblock, hand sanitizer, etc.) and go explore!
