Unfortunately, this is not a post about fascinating study of how to better understand your snake.  It is about the ethical and legal necessity of communicating with other people about your snake.  Two UPS employees got a shock and called law enforcement when they opened a suspicious package and detected movement inside the pillowcase enclosed in the box.  The movement was a boa.

The employees should not have opened the box without contacting either the shipper or law enforcement first.  The shipper should have made it clear that the box contained live animals.  Yes, this may lead to more paperwork and expense, but it safer for everyone, including the snake.  The solution to the recent bad publicity snakes have gotten is to demonstrate responsible snake caretaking and to talk about that to as many people as you can.

Another snake bite story.  A man working on a cable was recently bitten by a green mamba.  He will likely recover, but mambas are venomous and a bit is a serious injury.  Some reports say there are no licensed mamba owners in the area, another says there are people licensed to keep mambas, but the snakes are all accounted for.  Either way, this snake, who is still missing, seems to have been kept illegally.

Remember, if you need a license for your pet, get one.  They are expensive but cheaper than the consequences if you get caught.  Also, if your snake goes missing, it looks a lot better if you are the one who informs the police and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission rather than the local emergency room.  Our only hope of keeping snakes legally is to follow the restrictions and be responsible.  Many wild animals, not just snakes, are capable of stinging or biting, so when you're in a grassy area where you can't see clearly, be very cautious.
