This was a relaxed, small fair at which I can honestly say the birds seemed to be having as much fun as the people. Parrots were by far the best represented, with many of the birds relaxing on top of their cages instead of in them. Even the hand-fed babies from Parrotmount Aviaries, the tiniest of the finches, and the young parrotlets seemed to feel secure. I tried for a picture of the parrotlets and it didn't come out, so I'll give you a quick word picture – they were under a year, fully feathered, colorful, calmly alert little creatures, and totally charming. To get some idea of how charming some of the other birds were, see the slide show. Overall, I was impressed by the health and behavior of the birds – they were relaxed, alert, apparently very healthy, and kept in as sanitary conditions as birds can be.
I took my own advice, hard though it was, and didn't come home with a new friend. However, I did find plenty of ways to spoil my finches, and my husband and I finally kept it down to a natural wood perch and a ball filled with popcorn as a toy. Many of the bird toys for sale were handmade and attractive even to humans. There were many different bird foods and some large, gorgeous cages that would comfortably accommodate any bird. Everyone was pleasant and there was no hard selling, but it's still a dangerous place for the budgets of bird owners!
