Well, Ralph, you came to the right place. I'm personally a guy who wears such outlandish socks that I could care less what they match, as long as they're unique and different. They in essence make a statement: No matter what else I'm wearing, the socks take it to the next level. But this is my signature style, and most men are comfortable with rules while allowing their neckwear to be the more statement piece. I get this.
Therefore, it's important to follow this rule: Match your socks to your pants.
No, don't match the hue and tone exactly, but they should either be part of the family (monochromatic, see right), that is a shade lighter or a shade darker. However, complimentary colors work, too. Wearing dark blue jeans? Mustard works well in sock color, and so forth. This also gets you out of the mundane.
I grab some of my striped or patterned socks at Paul Smith or Banana Republic, but get this... you'll find some great whacky argyles at Urban Outfitters, too.
