The kits were standard issues to American soldiers in the Second World War — hence their popularity with your father's and grandfathers — but it should also be part of your arsenal.
Stock it with items you need and try to keep the individual amounts down to the pre-approved TSA sizes (3 ounces or less). (Check their rules before flying)

A $20 bill (you never know...)
Bar of your favorite soap
Inexpensive: X-Posed X-Ray Dopp ($12)
A quick, down and dirty Dopp Kit with an X-ray image on the outside as a nice tongue-n-cheek joke about traveling with this stuff through security. Not the most durable, but would make a great gift for a son or younger brother who one day should be getting one from below.
Middle-of-the-Road: Orvis Leather Shaving Kit ($69)
From the fishing and hunting clothiers at Orvis comes a well-constructed and handsome leather Dopp (also pictured above). Personalization available, so you can take your kit out with the boys for a weekend of quail hunting and not get it mistaken for everyone else's.
Luxe: Ghurka Holdall ($350)
A really classy, well-crafted full leather Dopp (which they call a "hold-all") in a light color. For those who need the extra nice leather and ability to say you have a Dopp that costs the same amount as your car payment. No frills, however. It still carries stuff.
