Summer Ain’t Over Until…

August 21, 8:28 AM
by Gwyneth Carmichael, Baltimore Nightlife Examiner

I know we say it every year, but seriously, out of nowhere all signs are pointing towards the farewell of summer! Teachers and kids are gearing up for back to school; Ravens jerseys are being spotted more and more on the streets and suddenly the sun has begun to turn in earlier than normal. Without warning, the final breaths of summer are upon us. No need to hold your heads down. I believe autumn to be the most exhilarating and entertaining season of all, especially in Ravens town. However, there are simply a few things you must check off your to do list before the close of Summer ’08.

Pickles Pub

Back in Iowa where my folks reside, they fry everything from Cheetos and Oreos to pork chops and pineapples. Odd to imagine, but indeed done and served at the IA State Fair. Here, we fry up pickles and serve em’ with beer. You still have ample time to batter up and pregame at Pickles Pub. It’s the place to be before, during and after the O’s do that magic that they do.

Crab Feast!

If you have yet to lay down your collection of read Examiner newspapers and wait patiently with big anticipating eyes listening to the hissing and clawing of the steaming crabs; this most definitely should be next on your agenda. There’s no need to fret, you have just entered prime season for these suckers as they’ve been fattening up all summer long. They’ll be mighty and meaty just in time for your Labor Day party. My recommendation would be Bo Brooks, either off the pier on their back deck or delivered home for a feast on yours’.

Bay Café Friday Happy Hour

It’s the place to be Friday at five. On a smaller scale, I’d say it’s Bmore’s version of OC’s Secrets. Best of all, it’s two for one specials until 7pm as the sun sets over the water and you forget the work week behind you. Some insider information- If you’re not too keen on making your way through where the palm trees sway with both your Coronas in hand, order your drink from inside. In lieu of an immediate round two to carry with you, the bartender will throw you a token for when you’re ready. On another note, be sure to hop on over to the dance floor. More often than not, an older couple (I like to refer them as Baby Houseman and Johnny Castle in their 60’s) tear it up on the dance floor. It is quite entertaining!

Little Havanas Sunday Funday

Everyone’s happy at Havanas. My suggestion is to skip brunch and get straight to the pitchers of Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s. It’s all about soaking up the atmosphere and their killer Mojitos. So sit back, relax and enjoy your day off!

Pier Six Pavilion

Would you could you on a boat? On a boat or in the venue, I would I would! Hit up Pier Six’s Summer Concert Menu. Upcoming shows:

Billy Idol’s “Idolize Yourself Tour" – This Friday, 8/22

The Pink Floyd Experience with Laser Light Show – Saturday, 9/20

Cake (with Winterpills) – Thursday, 10/2

Night of 100 Elvises

December 1, 10:45 PM
It is indeed one of my all time favorite comfort foods; peanut butter and banana grilled sandwiches. Scrumptious! There’s talk that Mr. Elvis himself may or may not have thrown a little bacon on his twelve-in-one-sitting sandwiches, but that really... Read More

Oddly enough, I’m having Pina Coladas apparently at my Thanksgiving Dinner Feast. Can we say, Mele Kalikimaka? For the more traditional Thanksgiving cocktails, the below are a few suggestions. I will tell you this  - whatever you do, do... Read More

November 11, 11:14 PM
Officially, the summer anthems have retired and the Starboard has boarded up the doors until 2009 (tear). Rex has run out of clever chalkboard phrases and us Baltimoreans will just have to resort to our good old hometown Orange Crushes and wait until... Read More

Halloween Superlatives

Surprisingly, only three Jokers spotted. But they were darn good. Fully decked in purple suits, grotesque make-up, pencil props and the Joker I was traveling with, certainly had mastered the character’s smooth strut down the street with his... Read More

This Season’s Real Creeper: Silent but Deadly

October 20, 10:46 PM
An uncomfortable topic for an uncomfortable situation. What I’m talking about here is the big smelly, white elephant in the room - or in the middle of the dance floor for that matter that proceeds to linger for the entire evening. Smiles have suddenly... Read More
