The Terps’ season ended Saturday with an 89-70 defeat at the hands of the Memphis Tigers, who used suffocating defense and lethal long-range shooting to build a commanding early lead.
Maryland had no answer for Memphis’ 8-for-11 first-half shooting from downtown. The Terps shut down Cal's vaunted 3-point shooting on Thursday, but couldn't replicate the feat on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Terps struggled to create any offense against the taller, more athletic Tigers. Greivis Vasquez scored 18 points but has likely revised his thoughts on whether Memphis (33-3, 16-0) would have a losing record in the ACC.
Vasquez’s quote was surely bulletin-board material for the already heavily-favored Tigers.
The Memphis team which dominated Maryland, Saturday was a much different team from the one which struggled in its opening round game against Cal State Northridge. Memphis’ superior athletes repeatedly broke Maryland’s press with ease, leading to the Tigers scoring off of three-on-twos or two-on-ones.
Five Memphis players scored in double figures. Freshman Tyreke Evans had 15 at halftime and led all scorers with 19.
Despite falling to Memphis, the Terps inclusion in the NCAA tournament and a first-round win over California made the season much more successful than many predicted.
