Philistin Makes Nagurski Watch ListUMD's Dave Philistin

On May 12 senior linebacker Dave Philistin was named to the watch list for the 2008 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is given annually to the best defensive player in college football.

Philistin joins 87 other football players, including 10 from the ACC, as hopefuls for the award, which is sponsored by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The winner will be named in November by the Football Writers Association of America’s All-America Committee. LSU’s Glenn Dorsey took home the 2007 Nagurski Trophy.

Philistin tallied 124 tackles last season, second on the team only behind 2007 Butkis Award semifinalist and 2007 Nagurski watch list member Erin Henderson. His 9.5 tackles/game ranked 4th in the ACC.

Iron Terp Olympics

Strength and conditioning coach Dwight Galt helped the team celebrate its last day of classes with the annual Iron Terp Olmypics, held at Byrd Stadium and the practice fields on May 16.

The team was split into 10 different squads, each comprised of 10-11 players.

Events included lifting exercises, tug of war, a tire flip competition, and a game of ultimate football.

91 players participated in the bench press competition, and 67 posted new personal bests. Senior DL Dean Muhtadi benched a team-high 470 lbs, and also set a team record with 36 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

OL Bruce Campbell and senior DL Ricardo Dacosta led their #9 team to victory in the tire flip, while Morgan Green and the #10 team defeated Jeremy Navarre’s #7 squad in the tug of war.

Several Terps Trying to Make Pros

While DT Dre Moore was the only Terp selected in the 2008 NFL Draft, several former teammates have signed free-agent contracts with professional clubs.

RB Lance Ball signed with the St. Louis Rams after attending Rookie Orientation Camp with the Green Bay Packers three weeks ago. OL Andrew Crummey originally signed with San Diego, but was released and now is under contract with the Washington Redskins.

Joining him in Washington is TE Jason Goode. DL Carlos Feliciano inked a deal with the New England Patriots, was released, and attended minicamp with the New York Giants two weekends ago.

Other signees include DB Isaiah Gardner (Jacksonville Jaguars), TE Joey Haynos (Green Bay Packers), LF Erin Henderson (Minnesota Vikings), and RB Keon Lattimore (Dallas Cowboys).
