Football's Edwin Williams Honored Twice

May 19, 11:47 AM

C Edwin Williams had a good week. On May 7, Williams was named to the spring watch list for the Rimington Trophy, given annually to the best center in college football. The senior was one of 42 players selected for the list, which also includes Florida State’s Ryan McMahon. Finalists will be chosen in November, and the winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards show in December.

Then, on May 9, Williams was named a recipient of the 2008 Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award. The award celebrates student-athletes who have achieved academic success while overcoming personal, academic, and/or emotional trials. Nationally, only five student-athletes receive the annual award. The recipients will be honored at a June 8 banquet in Kansas City, MO.

Clearly, Williams is a fine contributor to the program on and off the field. In addition to starting the last 26 games at center, he is active in the Terps’ community service efforts, a member of the Terrapin Council leadership unit, and was a 2007 Academic All-ACC honoree.

“Edwin is such a positive kid. He always has a smile on his face. He’s also an extremely hard worker. I have no doubt he’ll be a success in life at whatever he does,” noted head coach Ralph Friedgen.
