South Mountain Reservation, National Start! Walking Day

Celebrate National Start! Walking Day by joining The Health & Wellness Professional Network (HWPN) on a hike through the South Mountain Reservation this Wednesday, April 8th. This kid-friendly hike (no strollers, please) will begin at 10:30 am. Hikers should meet at the Dog Park at the South Orange Avenue entrance. The hike should last no more than 2 hours.

The hike will be led by Risa Olinsky, a certified wellness coach and personal trainer. A mother herself, Olinsky believes the foundation for a healthy lifestyle starts with parenting. "What we do as parents and how we treat our bodies set a life-long example for our children," Olinsky said. "Children model us in all we do, whether we realize it or not, and sometimes it takes years before it really shows. As a parent myself, I see little things in my boys (now adults) that I thought they never really picked up on and yet they did."

Hikers should dress appropriately and bring water. Bug repellent is also recommended. Each participant will get a free HWPN t-shirt and have the opportunity to "test drive" a pedometer. Plus there will be a "tailgate snack" to finish off the hike in celebration of National Start! Walking Day.

The American Heart Association has designated April 8th National Start! Walking Day. If you're unable to participate in the hike, you can still do your part by incorporating a 30-minute walk into your day.
