Roller derby is most definitely back... and with a vengeance. To see how seriously the ladies of the Garden State Rollergirls take their sport, check out their season opener this Friday night when the Ironbound Maidens battle the Hudson Valley Horrors of Hyde Park, NY at Branch Brook Park Roller Skating Center in Newark.

The Ironbound Maidens is the Garden State Rollergirls' all-star team. The GSR is an all-female, flat-track roller derby league that was established in 2006 and is completely skater owned and operated.

If you've never been then you're in for a treat. These girls are able to do more on skates than many of us can do on our own flat feet. Plus roller derby is a full-on contact sport. Now throw a little drama in the mix– courtesy of the competitors themselves– and you've got fun night out for the whole family. Rolling out Friday night are crowd favorites Von Fury, Lady Vengeance, Bonesaw, and Kelly CutThroat.

The doors open at 8 PM, the whistle blows at 9 PM. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door for adults. Kids under 10 are half price. Branch Brook Park Roller Skating Center is located at 7th and Clifton Avenues in Newark.

The next home bout is May 29th. It's the third annual GSR Charity Bout with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.
