This Saturday there's an event any family anywhere can participate in. It won't cost you anything. It won't take up much of your time. And your participation means everything. For just one hour, 8:30 to 9:30 pm, light some candles, break out a deck of cards and do your part for the planet.
For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. –The Earth Hour Web site
Earth Hour originated in Sydney Australia in 2007 with 2.2 million homes switching off their lights. That simple act resulted in a 10 percent drop in energy use during the hour. Wow.
By 2008 the movement grew to 50-million strong with landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Rome’s Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all participating. And now this year the World Wildlife Federation wants to see that number climb to 1 billion.
The results of this demonstration of solidarity will be taken to the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this December to impress upon the world leaders in attendance where we as world citizens stand on the global warming issue and how prepared we are to take action.
Over 74 countries and territories have already pledged their support. Many communities throughout New Jersey have also signed on. Consider it a self-imposed power outage. And use it as an opportunity to impress upon your kids how minor adjustments in our everyday routines can have a big impact. So, will you be voting? Let me know in the comments section below.
