Mariner President Chuck Armstrong, after describing this season as his most "miserable" with the team, left open the possibility that the team may hire MLB's first ever female general manager.
Armstrong described the team as "color-blind and gender'blind," although left out "how-to-win blind" when asked by reporters if he would consider hiring Los Angeles Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng for the teams vacant position. Ng has been an assistant for seven years for the Dodgers and was a top adviser to Yankees GM Brian Cashman prior to that.
"It's time for some fresh thinking," Armstrong said
Here, here Chucky. It remains to be seen if the M's are just talking big, but I'm all for it. Ng has a fairly impressive resume and something tells me the rest of the candidates may be sort of a "meet the new guy, same as the old."
With as soul-sucking as this season has been, any kind of excitement for this team is welcome. Even if the M's choose not to go the Ng route, I hope they hire someone who can be classified as "fresh blood." The organization has been playing it too safe for too long and it's time for some change (and, no, Bavasi's ludicrous signings and trades don't count as exciting, they count as borderline insane).
Judging by the anemic crowds that have been showing up lately to games, anything to get fans in this town talking again is a good thing. Just don't lose your new found fortitude Mr. Armstrong.
