House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) has told us that there are not enough votes to pass the Senate version of government health care. In fact, she said she is "way short". We are sure Congressman Adam Smith (D-Tacoma) was one of the votes she knew would go away.

Republican challenger Dick Muri (R- Steilacoom) supported Scott Brown's run for US Senate in Massachusetts. Muri opposes having the federal government take over the health care industry. Forcing Smith to take a vote in favor of the Senate Democrats' bill full of special interest favors would give Muri a campaign issue for the entire campaign. Smith would further draw the ire of Tea Party activists and inspire their campaigning against him. Muri will encourage their ire.

Reid and Pelosi are trying to put together a work around, but Reid does not seem to understand that ALL members of the House have to run for re-election in the fall. For members of the House such as Smith, they do not want to take this vote. In fact, they want to take a break on discussing anything to do with health care until after the election. Reid won't be able to get his bill through the House.
