We're hearing a lot of disinformation coming from both sides of the political aisle over HR 3200, the healthcare reform bill. It's hard to keep track of all of it, but let's focus on just a few here:
1. Insurance will be illegal. HR 3200 does NOT make privately held insurance illegal. This is completely untrue. This meme was started as soon as the bill was made public, and has been proven false. Citizens will still be able to access and utilize health insurance via the company of their choice.
That said, there will be a lot of new restrictions placed upon insurance companies that may make their industry less profitable.
2. The Canadian system is better. This is apples and oranges. Both systems as they exist are deeply flawed. For example, in the United States, people with pre-existing conditions either can't obtain insurance, or must pay considerably more than their neighbors for it.
Whereas in Canada, care is available to all, regardless of pre-existing conditions. However, the waiting lists are very long, and there is rationing of care depending on hospital budgets, surgery availability, and whether or not your condition will ultimately be terminal. In many cases, symptoms will be treated with drugs, and end of life care will be provided in place of live-saving surgery or medication.
A better alternative to both systems could be found in places like Italy, France, and Sweden where a public/private co-pay structure is in place.
3. Republicans are paying protesters to oppose the bill at townhall meetings. No. No one on the right is being paid by an over-arching organization, whether it be the GOP or some Soros-esque right-wing sugar daddy. People are raising their own money to travel to townhalls and have placards made. They are buying their own flags to either wave or hand out.
On the other side of the aisle however, agitators are being paid to get the word out about Obama's health plan. The picture to the right is a screen capture of a Sacremento Craigslist page, listing well paying jobs for people to preach the gospel of HR 3200.
