World of Warcraft has been coming up with some decent content in the last few patches that they’ve done since unleashing Ulduar upon legions of slavering players. Blizzard has added the in-game outfitter, Northrend dungeon maps, and will soon update the look of bear and cat druid forms, among other things. However, the new battleground of the Isle of Conquest (to be released in patch 3.2, no word on when that’s coming out, yet) sounds the most intriguing.
This BG sounds to me like Alterac Valley with a twist. While I know that comes dangerously close to comparing the Isle of Conquest to an M. Night Shyamalan movie, it’s the only thing I can come up with at the moment. There are reinforcements to bolster, locations to capture, and generals of the Horde or Alliance to kill. The gimmicky, twisty bit is when Blizzard adds in the much-touted siege vehicles and engines. Glaive thrower and catapult, you say? If they threw ballistas into the mix, I’d be a happy camper, skewering Alliance like shish kabobs. Hey, I never claimed to be unbiased.
Really, though, what the Isle of Conquest sounds to me is just another gimmicky battleground. My guildmate Taranik summed up what I feel is an excellent idea on our guild’s forums. “I have/had an idea for a BG...where there are just five hundred or so reinforcements, no cars, no nodes, no mines, just a flat, round field…no stats to QQ over, just straight-up killing… In Halo we call this Slayer.” Yes, Tara. I agree with you completely. I want to run in and smash people in the face, die, release, then do it all over again. Really, we’re all simple, blood-lusting creatures, here.
