We should have known that this Red Sox squad would not go deep into the 2009 postseason. Look at the way they backed into it. With a whimper.
So, to confirm their non-elite status among the 30 MLB teams, they proceeded to go 3 and out against an Angels team that, frankly, is not all that impressive. As one of the 38, 704 who witnessed the debacle at Fenway today, I can assure you that this one was par for the course. All season long, the bullpen was viewed as an impenetrable bulwark against all late-inning comers. The reality was that, in the second half of the season particularly, our relievers (led by the pitiful Manny Delcarmen) were pedestrian at best. And, honestly, how many times this year did you hold your breath during one of Jonathan Papelbon's cardiac saves?
Face it, Red Sox fans, this team was just not that good. From early injuries to a non-existent pre-June Papi, to Varitek's demise to Papelbon's fall from perfection—this was one of the worst 95-win Red Sox teams ever. Maybe they just spared us further agony by getting swept in the first round.
