Aurora Ponce was the valedictorian at Annenberg High School in South Los Angeles. Annenberg is an Accelerated School.

Aurora, an A student, peacefully protested class size increases and teacher layoffs. It was a student sit in.

At first she was denied the opportunity to speak at her graduation. Eventually, she was allowed to speak.

Before attending UC Davis in August, Ponce was going to tutor students from the Jaime Escalante Tutoring Program, which will be housed on the Accelerated School campus this summer.

She volunteered with the program last year. Ponce has taken almost a dozen college level courses. She would have been paid to tutor 25 hours a week.

"I'm going to college, I'm going to be broke," she said. "I was going to save that money for books. It's going to be hard."

We teach children the heritage of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We teach children to stand up for what they believe.

We teach children to be peaceful in their protests and to make their beliefs known.

Then the children are punished.

Donations for her college books/supplies are being accepted at www.RazaEducationFund.org.

Pledges can be Emailed to cutshurtkids@gmail.com or proyectos@razaeducationfund.org.
