Juana:  The LAUSD emergency credentialed teacher

My name is Juana and I am an emergency credentialed teacher in Los Angeles. The conditions of my employment were a bachelor’s degree, passing the CBEST Test, and continuing my education nights and summers towards a full credential.

I began at inner city elementary school teaching special education. I had no experience. Something happened and I was let go.

A nearby elementary school had an opening because a teacher was leaving the classroom to become a coordinator. So I was placed in front of a fourth grade gifted class. I had no experience. The teacher that I replaced did not like me and she had the ear of the principal.

So after a couple of years, I looked for another teaching position. I found one in a different area of Los Angeles. I taught Kindergarten. I had no experience. After a year, a change was necessary.

I located a position teaching sixth grade classes at a Los Angeles middle school. I had no experience. The parents came after me, but I am still there.

Why do I stay in teaching? It is the only thing that I know how to do with my bachelors, I have bills to pay, and my income is very limited.

What else can I do?

----------------------------------------------
Who is responsible? LAUSD allowed for emergency credentialed, untrained, non experienced teachers; the principals, particularly at the first two schools who assigned her to Special Education and Gifted, and did not stay on top of things; and the parents who allowed this to go on.
