Lisa Hawks knows the way to a woman's heart: through a good cut and color. This Arcadia resident and former "kitchen beautician" now has her own digs, the Chop Shop in Lauraville, and is quickly developing a loyal following.
The salon is located on what is becoming the hottest block in Northeast Baltimore, with neighbors like the Chameleon Cafe, Bediboo, and the Red Canoe. The space is retro-chic, decked out with old school hair dryers, animal prints and vintage furniture. There are plenty of celebrity rags so you can keep up with current events while you get your coiff on.
But the best part about the Chop Shop is Lisa herself. She's disarming in a way that makes you feel like an old friend. She's got kids, too, so she understands that moms need to be pampered sometimes. For example, when I explained to her that my son still won't sleep in his crib (let alone through the night) and that I hadn't had my hair done since I was pregnant, she immediatly offered me a glass of white wine. Lisa knows that sometimes Mama needs a glass of chardonnay at ten in the morning, and she ain't judging. Now THAT, my friends, is service.
Her consultation skills are phenomenal, which is great for us new moms. Since my son was born I've been... how do you say it? Less than articulate. Sleep deprivation has left me searching for nouns and verbs and, not finding them, trailing off in the middle a sentence and staring into space. But all I had to do was grunt and make a few vague gestures at my head and she totally got it. She gave me a beautiful cut and highlights while she patiently listened to me go on and on about the trials of new motherhood. She made me laugh, helped me relax, and, most importantly, made me look beautiful.
So, moms, head over to the Chop Shop for some "me" time. Dads, you can go too because now Lisa shares her space with Bill the Barber. Lisa also cuts kids hair, so you can bring the whole family. But for now, I'm going to keep her to myself.
Did I mention the wine?
