Football season is in full swing, (I think,) I really pay no attention to sports. However, movies are another thing. So below is a list of my top ten favorite football movies. I'm a woman, so cut me a break guys.
Bryan's Song (1971) Based on a true story, this film is a well done made for TV film. It's a tear jerker, but the Kleenex are well spent.
We Are Marshall (2006) Again, as so many good football films are, this is based on a true story. In 1970, the Marshall University football team suffered a lose to East Carolina University. On the flight home the plane with players, coaches and some fans crashed on approach to the airport. This film isn't only about the horrible loss that Marshall University endured, but about the spirit of people who pull together to heal, to be better to honor their fallen teammates.
Paper Lion (1968) Alan Alda plays George Plimpton, who was writing a story for "Sports Illustrated." He was going to tell people what it was like to be a rookie quarterback. After several teams turned him away, the Lions allowed him to go to training camp. Many of the real players are in the film.
Radio (2003) The first of two movies with Cuba Gooding, Jr on my list. This film is based on actual events (so I can avoid saying 'a true story' again.) Cuba plays a developmentally challenged man who is taken under the wing of the coach of a small South Carolina high school. Radio becomes an inspiration and a role model.
The Waterboy (1998) Adam Sandler plays a waterboy for a college football team. The coach discovers he has a talent for tackling much bigger players than himself. Sandler's character becomes the star of the team, for a while.
Jerry Maguire (1996) The second film on my list with Cuba Gooding, Jr starring, along with Tom Cruise. Cruise plays a sports agent who loses his job because he decides the long term welfare of his clients is important. Not a popular thought at the management firm. Jerry ends up with only one client. A football player, played by Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. "SHOW HIM THE MONEY." A funny and touching film also starring Rene Zellweger.
The Replacements (2000) A real players strike spawns a fictional movie. Starring Keanu Reeves and the great Gene Hackman, this film lost money at the box office, but it's Keanu, he's so cute and it has football in it so it's on the list. I have other reasons, but the aren't as important.
The Longest yard (1974) Burt Reynolds stars as an inmate who is asked by the warden to put together a team and then throw the game with the guards. I like Robert Aldrich films, "Dirty Dozen" is a classic as is "Longest Yard". Burt Reynolds was voted star of the year a few years in a row by theater owners.
Friday Night Lights (2004) Many towns have a Friday night filled with high school football, but few towns love their team more than Odessa Texas. A story that could belong to so many places hits a cord on many levels. This film also spawned a hit TV show.
Rudy (1993) Rudy, played by Sean Astin (Patty Duke's son,) wants to play football for Notre Dame, however his grades are poor and he's ....small. This film is all about setting goals and going after them no matter what. Oh, yeah.....and football.
I hope you find something to like on my list. It's kind of football flicks for chicks.
Enjoy.
