According to the American Humane Association, June is American Humane's Adopt-A-Cat Month. The American Humane Association, founded in 1877, is the only national organization dedicated to protecting both children and animals. A nonprofit membership organization, American Humane is headquartered in Denver.

Approximately 4 million cats end up in shelters every year. Each year, thousands of kittens are born during spring and summer -- and many end up in animal shelters, waiting for loving homes. To promote adoptions of these playful, affectionate animals, American Humane celebrates Adopt-A-Cat Month® in June. Come visit the fabulous felines at your local animal shelter, and take home your new best friend.
Adopting a cat will enrich your world in so many different ways. Here’s how:

• Cats will keep you entertained with their playful antics.
• Cats are very affectionate and love to cuddle with you.
• Having a cat can reduce your blood pressure and prevent heart disease.
• Cats are very clean -- they bathe themselves!
• Cats are independent and can be left alone while you are at work.
• Cats do not need to be housebroken -- using the litter box comes naturally to them.
• Cats do not need a lot of space. They are perfect pets for apartments and smaller homes.
• Taking care of a cat can help teach a child responsibility and humane values.
• Cats get plenty of exercise living indoors. Just 15 minutes of playtime each day will  satisfy a cat.
• By adopting, you’ll be saving a life.

In Cleveland, Ohio, it’s Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month and the Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL) is celebrating by holding its own “race” to the finish line with reduced cat adoption fees during the month of June so adopters will help them take first place for happy endings in their homes! The Cleveland Animal Protective League's mission is to foster compassion and end animal suffering. Incorporated in 1913, they are an independent, nonprofit humane society located in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood.

Between June 1 and 30, black and black and white cats and kittens will be leading the pack with adoption fees of $55 for kittens (under 5 months old) and $30 for adult cats (5 months to 6 years). All kitten and cat fees will be reduced to these same low prices every Thursday, or “Purrsday,” during the month of June. Also between June 1 and June 30: Cat adopters will get a free cat bed! (While supplies last; quantities are limited.) All cat adopters of a will receive a free 4 pound bag of Hill’s Science Diet food. Microchips will be available for animals adopted during this time for only $10. All adopters will receive a free 2009 Cleveland APL Pet Calendar.

All animals adopted from the APL have been spayed-neutered, tested for heartworm or FeLV/FIV, have received age appropriate vaccinations and treatment of worms and fleas, and come with a collar and APL ID Tag, helpful species-specific animal care information, and a free initial veterinary exam. Cats and kittens come with a travel box, and dogs and puppies go home with a leash. Remember, by adopting, you’ll be saving a life.
