Mike has been cycling almost as long as he can remember. From the very first day when he grabbed that training-wheel-less Schwinn and took off, bikes have been a fundamental part of his life. He's raced mountain bikes, road bikes and even done a bit of touring. Mike has explored the roads and trails of the Front Range for the last 14 years.
I woke this morning to see the impending doom of storm clouds gathering outside my window. I shook my head in frustration at the crazy spring weather we've had here in cozy Longmont and all over the front range. It's been a challenge to get good, consistent riding in with the wind and weather thwarting many attempts. If you have, good for you, chances are your fitness shows it.
I was delaying my decision to brave the weather and likely get wet while watching a recently acquired classic cycling film, Le Course en Tete. This film is a must see for any cycling fan and shows the great Eddy Merckx with an intimacy that is hugely compelling. About two hours later and I'd decided lounging and doing chores were more in line with the day than a training ride.
Did you know that the first Grand Tour of the season is already underway? I'm talking about the Giro d' Italia and you can see live coverage and highlights on Versus and Cycling.tv. If you don't have a favorite pro to root for, follow the Slipstream cycling team as they strive to make their mark in Italy and get ready for the Tour de France in July.
So what to do this weekend? How about a ride to Carter Lake? This perennial favorite is moderately hilly and offers good views from the lake. Start early to avoid weekend sightseers and bring plenty of food, long finger gloves and a nice, packable wind jacket like my personal fave, the Optik from Pearl Izumi. Of course, you'll need the sunscreen too as the forecast is for temps in the 80's!
