In the weekly flier I received from Fiesta, I was amazed to find that 9-12 count wild Gulf shrimp are $3.49 a pound, and just $5.99 headless. That's right, from the Gulf, not southeast Asia, wild, not farm-raised, and jumbo, or super jumbo, as these are called these days, 9-12 count per pound, for such a pittance. The low prices are the result of Hurricane Ike, which, somewhat surprisingly, actually benefited shrimp, as a June 8 article in the Chronicle reported.
Being a little lazy, and realizing that $3.49 head-on and $5.99 decapitated worked out to being roughly similar prices for the meat of the shrimp, I picked up some of the latter on Thursday. The shrimp were excellent. In case you are worrying about the quality of the seafood at Fiesta, it uses the same supplier as several other area supermarkets and well-known restaurant groups, and more than a few acclaimed eateries. The difference at Fiesta is likely just the price.
These prices are good through Tuesday, June 23. The flier specified only the Dunlavy at Richmond location, so I'm not sure if these great prices are the same at the other thirty-two Houston area Fiesta locations, but it's certainly worth a try.
