The Philadelphia Phillies are making a historically extremely rare appearance in the Fall Classic. Though they won the Series last year, it was only their second one in over 125 years. They are losingest franchise in sports history, the only one with 10,000 losses. This is certainly part of the reason that Philadelphia is primarily known for its vociferously booing fans. The other thing is the Philly cheesesteak.
This odd Series matchup against the Yanks (not on the Yanks side, though), plus the ringing in my years from last night's great show from The Pogues and the wonderfully incomprehensible Shane MacGowen at the House of Blues made me think of the best cheesesteak in Houston. The Celtic connection comes from Pete Little, the co-host of the "Irish Aires" show each Saturday on KPFT. He developed the sandwich when he worked at Market Square Bar & Grill downtown some years ago.
This sandwich, frankly, tastes little of Philly, much less Ireland, but it tastes great. Pete's Philly begins with plenty of flavorful and tender sliced beef properly cooked, then crumbles of blue cheese, and sliced and quickly sautéed fresh jalapeños, all contained in a fresh, crusty Vietnamese baguette. It's a great cross-cultural amalgamation that is representative of Houston. Though there are more authentic South Philly style cheesesteaks in town, there is not one nearly as good as this one. It's one the best hot sandwiches in town.
Pete's Philly is $8.50 and includes a choices among roasted quality thin and crispy French fries, new potatoes, cole slaw, cilantro rice, a fresh fruit cup, potato chips, or grilled vegetables.
