Within the space of a just over a couple of weeks, Houston will be blessed with visits from the two greatest rock bands ever to hail from the Emerald Isle. The Pogues, who play at the House of Blues tomorrow night, have never enjoyed anywhere near the worldwide popularity that U2 has, but they earned plenty critical acclaim and a cult following for their unique brand of music once described as The Chieftains meet the Sex Pistols.
The band, especially lead singer Shane MacGowen, were known to down an alcoholic beverage or several. When driving through Boulder prior to the opening of a friend's bar in Denver some years ago, the local college radio station prefaced a Pogues song as being sung by, "the drunkest man in the drunkest band from the drunkest land."
