A few weeks ago I got the chance to join friends for dinner at John Sheeley's Mockingbird, one of my favorite local restaurants. The food and dining experience were both very good, as always. While enjoying wine at the bar before being seated, we were presented with their complimentary snacks. These were something beyond the ordinary bar munchies. The candied pecans were easy to eat, and more savory than sweet, which worked well before a meal.
Even better were the cured olives. I don't eat olives as much as I feel I should, but their plump red and green varieties were excellent and tough to resist, probably the tastiest olives I've ever had. Afterward, I asked Sheeley about the olives. He said that they are marinated in garlic, herbes de Provence, olive oil and white wine vinegar. Something that I'll have to try at home; I'll be happy if they end up nearly as flavorful.
The high quality snacks are indicative of the attractions at the relatively small bar area at Mockingbird. It's good for solo diners and worth visiting to start the evening, or for a nightcap. It's also well-suited for those who might want a little food along with cocktail or wine. There is a separate and enticing menu of small plates for $9 that includes their excellent fried calamari, house-made pâté and cured meat, mussels in coconut milk, king salmon tartar with sesame and sriracha, and their famous American kobe beef burger.
