The 2009 Los Angeles Dodgers sure have a flair for the dramatic — and no player in blue more than Andre Ethier.
Ethier smashed a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth at Chavez Ravine to lift the Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Atlanta Braves Thursday night. It was his major-league-leading fifth walk-off homer of the year.
Braves closer Rafael Soriano entered the ninth with a two-run lead, but didn't get a single Dodger out. The ever-valuable Juan Pierre hit the eighth pitch he saw for an infield single. Rafael Furcal pulled a single to right, moving Pierre to third. And then Ethier — who is having a breakout power season (.273, 22 HR, 72 RBI ... so far) — stepped to the plate.
Soriano, who threw Ethier two straight balls was forced to challenge him. Ethier won the battle, yanking a homer into the right-field bleachers to send the home crowd home in elation.
It was the LA's 11th walkoff win, and marked the 29th time this year the team came from behind to notch a victory. The Dodgers continue to have the best record in baseball, pushing their record to 67-42.
