I've said, a couple of times, that it might be a good idea for the Dodgers to bring Pedro Martinez home to finish his career how it started — in Dodger blue.
I mean, really ... what could it have hurt? The Dodgers have needs in the back of their rotation. The Jason Schmidt experiment has not worked out. Neither have the other options in the five hole.
And if this team wants to not only get into the playoffs (a near certainty since the Dodgers have had the best record in baseball for pretty much the whole season) but get to and win the World Series, it wouldn't hurt if they had a proven winner pitching important games after the top-line guys in their prime at the front.
Pedro is the very definition of that kind of guy. And he proved it tonight with the Phillies in their 12-5 rout of the Chicago Cubs. Here's Pedro's line tonight:
5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Tell me that production wouldn't be great to have in a fifth starter in the playoffs. Note the strike out to walk ratio. Pedro was challenging hitters and getting the job done — because he's a great pitcher, a gamer and a Hall of Famer.
The irony, of course, is that the decision by the Dodgers to not seriously pursue bringing Pedro back into the fold could come back to bite them ... and hard. Pedro, if he gets to face the Dodgers in the playoffs, will be bringing his best stuff and his best grit. And even at the age of 37, with half the arm he used to have, Pedro is a good bet to be good enough to beat whoever the Dodgers put against him on the mound that night.
