Dylan Hernandez assures readers of the LA Times' Dodgers blog that Russell Martin will no longer be the hardest-working catcher in show business.
According to Hernandez, Manager Joe Torre was asked if he's managed to convince Martin to give up a few days behind the plate this season. Martin started 138 games last year, among the most in baseball. And as you can see from the photo at left, that kind of production comes with a certain amount of professional peril.
In the clubhouse in Camelback Ranch, the 26-year-old catcher heard the conversation with Torre and nodded, saying:
At this point, I'm going to let [Torre] work his magic.
Good thinking, Russ. They don't call those the "tools of ignorance" for nothing. Torre knows what he's doing.
You're becoming worthy of the pantheon of great Dodger catchers. But you need rest once in a while to make sure you are not a footnote in club history — a great catcher and clubhouse leader for just a few years.
