Texas’ oldest craft brewery is now its newest craft brewery... so to speak.
Although not exactly North Texas news, the Saint Arnold Brewery has formally moved into its new brewing facilities located just north of downtown Houston.
Founded in 1994, Saint Arnold is the oldest still-operating craft brewery in the state. Having outgrown their own original brewing facilities, owner Brock Wagner negotiated the purchase of the old Houston ISD food service warehouse in 2007. After $6 million in renovations, the formal ribbon-cutting was held this past Wednesday.
The HISD building was originally built in 1914 and has been abandoned for years, so the purchase and move benefits both Saint Arnold and the City of Houston. After a few more technical upgrades and a few installations, the brewery should be operational within weeks.
This move will provide Saint Arnold with the space to more than quadruple their current brewing capacity, as well as providing ample (air-conditioned) room for hospitality and extra tours. Saturday tours were planned to begin this weekend at the new location but an occupancy permit from the city fell through; more details as soon as this issue is resolved.
