Stock your Halloween party with craft beer
If you are either hosting or attending a Halloween party this weekend, there is no reason not to include good craft beer choices. Luckily, there are plenty of beers available in our local market that are holiday-specific.
- Blackened Voodoo by Louisiana’s Dixie Brewing Company. A good crowd-pleaser with a flavor somewhere between a Shiner Bock and an Ugly Pug.
- Dead Guy Ale by Rogue Ales of Oregon. Another very popular amber ale, known by its characteristic skeleton on the label. It can pull double-duty if you are also celebrating Dia de la Muerte.
- Duvel by Brouwerij Moortgat of Belgium. Flemish for “Devil,” this magnificent Belgian pale ale remains one of my all-time favorites.
- Hobgoblin or WychCraft by Wychwood Brewery. Plenty of spooky, Halloween-themed beers are produced by this UK brewer.
- Maudite by Unibroue Brewery of Quebec, Canada. French for “The Damned” and named after a very interesting legend, this strong Belgian-style ale is also another of my year-round favorites.
- Pumpkinhead Ale from Shipyard Brewing Company of Maine. Fall brings us a ton of pumpkin ales, and this is one that I tend to like over some other brewers.
- Mephistopheles, Samael and The Beast from Avery Brewing Company of Colorado. Avery’s “Fallen Angel” series of beers are strong, potent, a little pricey and definitely not for the faint of heart. Each deserves its own separate review at some time in the future.
- Witches’ Brew from Brouwerij Van Steenberge. I ran across this Belgian ale just this week, a very dry and aggressively hopped (for the style) tripel from the makers of Piraat and Gulden Draak. New to our local market, available in 750-ml bottles for about $10-$12.
Cheers!
