Dear Lauren: I’m getting ready to propose to my girlfriend. I’ve thought about all kinds of crazy, over the top ways to propose, (putting the ring in her dessert at dinner, skywriting, having it written on the Jumbotron at a Baltimore Ravens game, etc.), but now I’m thinking a classic proposal would be best because she’s really into romance. What do you think? Have any ideas? –About to be a husband

Dear About to be a husband:

I think that once your girlfriend finds out how much thought you put into your proposal, she’ll be thrilled…even if you wind up writing it in crayon on the back of a coloring book.

So many people do the over-the-top thing these days that the idea has lost its originality. It almost as though it’s become a competition to see who can be the most outrageous. Sometimes, I wonder whatever happened to romance.

I love the idea of a classic get-down-on-one-knee proposal. If your girlfriend is a romantic at heart, she will, too. Light a few candles, make her a nice meal, and ask her to be your wife sometime after the filet mignon and before the bananas foster.

Have a wonderful life together…you’re off to a great start.
