If your refrigerator is decorated with invitations to upcoming weddings, and you're stressed out because you have nothing to wear, fear not! I have some advice to help you power through wedding season looking fabulous. Here are the answers to the most commonly asked questions about wedding attire:
Can I wear black to a wedding?
Yes. Although, the overall look should never be "doom and gloom." Don't hesitate to call on your favorite LBD for a semi-formal wedding (especially an evening wedding), but punch it up with a little color. Accessorize with jewelry and a fun shoe, like so:
Can I wear white to a wedding?
Unless you are the bride, No. Steer clear of anything all white, ivory, or beige. Even light yellow or pale pink can be deceivingly similar to the bride's signature color, so be careful!, and avoid anything too ethereal.
Do I have to wear/match the bride's colors?
Unless you have a role in the wedding or the bride asked you to wear her colors, No. However, if you are going to be front and center in many photos, (e.g. you are the mother of the flower girl or you are in charge of the guest book), it is polite to wear coordinating (or at least non-clashing) colors.
What are the best looks for a semi formal wedding?
Best keep it simple and elegant to tastefully blend into the overall scene of the wedding. You want to be remembered as the bride's lovely friend/cousin/co-worker, NOT "the lady in the crazy magenta polka dot dress, what was she thinking?"
This year, black and white is a fantastic choice for late afternoon/evening weddings. Add a colorful shoe, interesting jewelry, and a fun clutch to complete the look:
NOTE: For a late morning/early afternoon "casual" ceremony, I love a satin mini, like this silk charmeuse floral ECI, worn with flat shoes and bold jewelry. The overall look is sunny and sweet.
Avoid anything overly sequined or sparkley (if it's an outdoor wedding, the light reflection from your dress may blind others) or anything too revealing.
Is it ok to bring an extra pair of shoes?
Absolutely. It's perfectly acceptable for guests to switch into more comfortable shoes (flats!) for dancing and partying during the reception. I'm sure your bride would much rather have you busting a move than sitting out due to sore feet!
Remember, weddings are meant to be joyous and fun! Overall, you want your outfit to be classy and comfortable enough to wear all day.
