A 66 year old wealthy career woman is the oldest mother-to-be in Britain.
Elizabeth Adeney is 8 months pregnant with what is believed to be her first child. She is four years older than the previous record holder from Italy.
Adeney is believed to have undergone IVF in the Ukraine because most British clinics will not treat woman over the age of 50. Friends of Adeney, a divorcee say she is in perfect health and has been desperate to conceive for years.
Adeney will be about 80 years old when her child becomes a teenager.
This case has brought up much debate over late motherhood and the ability of science that allows woman in their 50s and 60s to conceive.
Doctors have said that the chief health risk for older mothers is pre-eclampsia--a disorder that can lead to blood clots and serious complications and even death. For more information on this disorder go to http://www.preeclampsia.org/about.asp
Adeney is just one of many older women who has had or sought IVF treatment abroad in the last few years.
The oldest woman to give birth in the world was 70 from India, who had a twin boy and girl last year.
So what is too old to have a baby? Is the mother being selfish? Has science gone too far?
Tell me your thoughts.
