Rule #6: Drinking:
We all know the gold standard for drinking is 8, 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Everyone since the beginning of time has told us that. You've probably even seen some people haul around huge bottles of water, just to be sure they get theirs. But the rest of us, the one's like the Dude, would never do that. I mean how are you going to focus on drinking something like water with all the other issues we have to deal with.? It's easy to lose focus on your carpet or money in brief cases if you're constantly worried about how much drinking water you've consumed. Well, the answer is, you don't have to.
It's good enough to drink something with meals and when you're thirsty. Food has water in it doesn't it? Well, that counts. Even caffeinated drinks such as coffee and tea count. Fruits and vegetables have water in them, they count. So drink when you're thirsty and drink something with meals and you'll be fine. Unlike the Dude, watch your intake of alcohol as it dehydrates you and of course this defeats the purpose.
How do I know this? Well a National Academy of Sciences panel recently determined that healthy women get adequate amounts of fluids from normal drinking habits and letting their thirst guide them. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess men are not an exception to this rule. However, if you live in hot climates, you probably need to make a concerted effort to drink additional water just because of the environment. Otherwise, don't sweat it. (No pun intended.)
Ok, so we've debunked the 8 ounce times 8 drinks a day rule. And since this post is shorter than usual, I've included a brief video of the Dude for those of you who have never heard of him. I find it hard to believe, but have been told there are some out there who need this. So here is an introduction to the Dude. I think you'll be able to put these health lesons into context as a result.
