Tonight President Obama will address a joint session of Congress, one day after Congress returns from the August break. After a combative month of town hall meetings for some Congressional members, a “pep rally” will be a welcome change.

A “pep rally” is just what the President needs to do tonight, he has to inspire the team, and put a new spark back into the weary. This will be an important speech for the President, not since the “race speech” he made during the campaign will so much be at stake. The “race speech he made during the campaign possibly was a factor in his election to the Presidency, the speech tonight, could possibly effect his Presidency and the future of many Congressional members.

Obama has to be non-partisan in tonight’s speech, if he continues to blame Republicans for not having a healthcare bill, and if he dismisses town hall meeting opponents, he will only continue the divisive nature of the healthcare debate thus far. It is reported that the President is going to answer all questions being raised during the last months, but if he continues to say things like “if you like your doctor, you can keep them”, if he continues to say “we need a government option” he will only continue fuel the fire of opponents. For many these are unbelievable statements. Tonight President Obama will have a receptive audience, over half of the Congress is Democrat. What we will be watching is the responses during the speech, the Democrats will be applauding at every chance, the Republicans will be setting on their hands, but listen for the boo’s. For the Democrats, this will be a “dog and pony show” for the television audience, President Obama needs to come out of this speech as a leader.

The healthcare bill as proposed is being touted as the Obama healthcare bill, but, neither The White House or President Obama have contributed one word to the bill. President Obama has left the complete drafting of this healthcare bill to Congress, and now he is defending healthcare reform that he left up to Congress to pass, and a divided Congress has divided Americans and left a tarnished White House.

For the last month President Obama has continued to accuse misinformation as a dividing factor in the healthcare debate, a trillion dollar price tag, paying for abortions, rationed healthcare for seniors, a European type of healthcare, the destruction of private insurance companies, fines for not joining a government healthcare program, benefits for illegal immigrants, and many more accusations have been debated and denied. Tonight Obama will have to either prove these accusations wrong or continue to divide Americans and Congressional members.

There are many supporters and opponents that are “dug in”, they are either 100% with him, or 100% against him. The President will tell you that most folks agree on maybe 80% of the healthcare plan, but this may not be true. Opponents may agree America needs some healthcare reform, but they are 100% against any Obama plan. If President Obama gets up and speaks for 45 minutes with the same rhetoric we’ve been hearing for the last 2 months this healthcare plan is “DEAD”.

Tonight President Obama has a daunting task, he must secure his base, he has to sway the undecided, and he is going to have to convince some opponents his plan is best for America. He has to show leadership and he has to be convincing, anything less and he will not only lose the battle, he will lose the healthcare war.
