Dog afraid of fireworks? You can help.

Is your dog afraid of fireworks?

Fireworks can be one of the more challenging events for dogs, even if they are normally not scared of noises.

There are many strategies that you can use to lessen the stress associated with fireworks. Unfortunately there aren't any "quick fixes" for fireworks anxiety. Many of the strategies take a lot of time and there are situations when the most that can be accomplished is just to make a dog a bit calmer, but the fear is always present.

One of my dogs is afraid of fireworks, and has become much more comfortable over the years by using these techniques. One of the frustrating things for me is that it seems like people start shooting off fireworks earlier and later each year. I already hear fireworks in my neighborhood and they seem to last until late July.

Here are some options for you to try:

  • Comfort Zone. This is a plugin or spray that can calm dogs. You can read this article about it.
  • Fireworks CD for desensitization. You can purchase a CD that contains recorded fireworks sounds and slowly get your dog accustomed to it. The key is to go slowly. Put your stereo on the lowest volume so your dog barely notices the sounds and periodically give treats. As you turn up the volume give more treats. If your dog does not take treats or shows anxiety, you need to turn down the volume or muffle the speakers and work more slowly.
  • Melatonin. This is an easily obtained naturally-occuring hormone that helps regulate sleep. When used in dogs, it can calm them down and cause them to sleep. You should check with your veterinarian about whether this is appropriate for your dog and how much to use. This can be found at most drug stores and Whole Foods.
  • Overall sound desensitization work. The more "jumpy" your dog is, the more reactive he will be to all types of sounds. If your dog has barking issues in general, you can purchase my Dog Barking EBook and help your dog overcome his barking issues. This can help
